Daytona Beach, Fla. (24 January 2014) -Stevenson Motorsports opened the 2014 IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge at Daytona International Speedway as the team debuted the brand-new Chevrolet Camaro Z/28.R. The weekend marked the first competition outing for the brand-new car, and the team emerged from the event with a huge amount of data and experience with the car. While the weekend didn’t ultimately provide the results the team was looking for, the Daytona opener was the first step forward as the promising new entry for the GS Class looks to have an impact as the season develops.

North Carolina resident John Stevenson, of Stevenson Motorsports, is the recipient of the 2013 Rolex Bob Snodgrass Award of Excellence. The announcement was made during the traditional prelude to the Rolex 24 At Daytona – the Grand Marshal Dinner – which was held at the Daytona 500 Club and attended by 300 guests on Friday, January 24, 2014. Camaro Z/28.R Sends Historic Name Back to the Track

Date: 1/21/2014

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 returns to its racing roots this week when the all-new Camaro Z/28.R race car debuts in a 2.5-hour endurance race ahead of the 52nd Rolex 24 At Daytona. It will be one of the most production-based competitors on the track, sharing aero, engine and even axle components with the new 2014 Camaro Z/28.

Stevenson Motorsports and CKS Autosport will campaign Z/28.R race cars in the GS class of the IMSA Continental Tires SportsCar Challenge. The Daytona race begins at 1:45 p.m. EST, on Friday, Jan. 24, kicking off the 12-race 2014 season.

“The original Camaro Z/28 was designed for racing and became an iconic performance car through its hard-fought victories,” said Mark Kent, director of racing for Chevrolet. “A new chapter in racing begins this week, as the new Camaro Z/28 makes its competition debut in one of the most hotly contested series in motorsports.”

Developed alongside its production counterpart, the Z/28.R  incorporates the same performance elements that make the 2014 Camaro Z/28 the most track-capable Camaro ever. To enhance grip, for example, the Z/28.R’s body shares the same downforce-generating aero package as the production model, including:

  • Front splitter
  • Rear spoiler with wickerbill
  • Hood extractor vent
  • Rockers, wheel-house extensions and front tire deflectors
  • Belly pan.

The Z/28.R is also powered by the same LS7 7.0L V-8 engine as the production Z/28 and employs the unique, helical-gear limited-slip rear differential found on the production model. It is standard in the Z/28, helping the driver put down more power to the pavement when exiting corners.

“Apart from series-mandated equipment and the specialized suspension components needed for endurance racing, the Z/28.R is as close to a production-spec race car as you’ll find,” said Kent.

Advancing the Z/28 legacy

As Stevenson Motorsports and CKS Autosport kick off a full season of racing in the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge with their new Camaro Z/28.R race cars, they’ll advance the legacy of Camaro endurance racing that dates to the original Z/28’s 1967 introduction, when it was developed for the Trans-Am series. More recently, the Camaro GS.R won six races from 2011 to 2013 in the Continental SportsCar Series Grand Sport class, helping Chevrolet achieve a runner-up finish in the GS championship last season.

“The new Camaro Z/28.R is a significant advancement from the GS.R that won multiple races in the Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge the last three years,” said Lisa Talarico, Chevrolet program manager for the Continental Tire series. “We expect the new engine package, suspension components and aerodynamic improvements to help our teams to further successes in the 2014 GS class. The GS class is full of great competitors, and we believe the performance level of the new Z/28.R will provide us the opportunity to contend for a championship.”

The 2014 Camaro Z/28 goes on sale this spring.

Monterey, Calif. (8 September 2013) – Stevenson Motorsports took its fifth GRAND-AM Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge podium of the season on Sunday after Matt Bell and John Edwards came home second in a wild race at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.

The result is the third consecutive podium at the track for the duo, who won both the 2011 and 2012 races at the track for Stevenson Motorsports.

Edwards ran the opening stint in podium position before turning the car over to Bell to take to the finish. A LOOK BACK – Kansas Speedway:
Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge: Stevenson Motorsports claimed the team’s second win of the season at Kansas Speedway as Matt Bell and John Edwards combined to lead a race-high 27 laps in the No. 9 Camaro GS.R en route to victory in the SFP Grand Prix. The result marked the team’s fourth podium finish this year and was a welcome result after two disappointing results in the previous two events. The victory sees Stevenson Motorsports remain second in the championship, improving their margin over the third place team by 26 points.

Rolex Series: The SFP Grand Prix marked Round 10 of the 2013 GRAND-AM championship, and with a hard-earned run to fourth place, the team is hoping that the result is another positive step towards a run to the championship title. Edwards started the race from fourth on the grid and settled in to run in podium position in the opening stages. A pit stop for a driver change saw the team looking to make a wicker change at the back of the car to provide more stability on the high-speed oval. Unfortunately, a complication with installing the wicker saw the pit stop go longer than planned as Liddell returned to the track back in eighth place on Lap 30. A subsequent pit stop where the team elected to skip the tire change helped to claw back track position as the car moved up to run as high as second. A final stop for fuel, wicker change, and new tires as well as a driver change set the stage for Edwards to run the final segment and cross the finish line in fourth to earn valuable championship points. With the result, Stevenson Motorsports is currently just three points out of the points lead with two big races to go.

The Stevenson squad made its last pit stop with about 50 minutes to go under green for four tires and fuel, as the final stop for the No. 61 saw the team take advantage, as they needed less fuel and took no tires. But a strong run from Edwards in the final stages of the race saw him run among the top-five and move his way up the order to take second at the checkered flag and claim the NAEC title.

Rolex Series: Fighting through changing and variable weather conditions at Watkins Glen, Stevenson Motorsports returned to Victory Lane once again as drivers Robin Liddell and John Edwards scored a second consecutive Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen win for the team. The team led the fabled Six Hour six different times with the No. 57 Stevenson Automotive Camaro GT. R for a total of 67 of the 164 laps run. The win propelled the team up not only in the GRAND-AM Rolex Series Team Championship standings, but also in the North American Endurance Championship presented by VISITFLORIDA.com (NAEC) standings which will feature its final round at Indianapolis.

Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge: Stevenson Motorsports had been hoping for a strong result at Watkins Glen on Saturday as the team entered the Continental Tire 150 event second in the championship, but contact from behind early in the race saw the team playing catch up almost from the very start with drivers Matt Bell and John Edwards combining to finish sixth. Bell was able to keep the car going through the gravel trap and return to the track but the car had sustained rear end damage and was forced to make an early pit stop to make repairs to the exhaust. Constantly changing weather conditions worsened with about 40 minutes remaining in the race when heavy rain fell. Edwards masterfully kept the Camaro on track while several other cars spun off, creating a caution period that lasted over 30 minutes. With most of the field still on slicks despite the wet track, the race went back to green with just under two minutes to go. Just one final lap of green flag action remained and Edwards took sixth at the finish.
